Are family staycations still popular in 2022?

In the summers following covid restrictions, the UK saw some of the highest ever demand for staycations among those eager to get back into the great outdoors. But now that the world has slowly opened up, are staycations still on the cards?

Recent reports have shown that despite some other countries relaxing their restrictions, there is still more interest in staycations than there was pre-pandemic. Research shows that ongoing disruptions in airports and ever changing rules is leading to families opting for the more familiar and budget friendly option of staying closer to home. And who can blame them? There’s so much on our doorstep to explore without setting foot on a plane.

What does this mean for family camping?

The best advice we can give you is to plan ahead, particularly if you’re looking to go on a camping holiday during the summer months. Popular campsites will fill up quickly, so book ahead to secure your spot. Particularly if you’re a camper van or motorhome owner and you want to make sure you get a good spot with hook up, as these are often in shorter supply.

We’d also recommend you check your kit early to avoid any last minute surprises, you may find that stock is lower once the season gets underway and it may be harder than usual to grab what you need en route.

Why not try something new?

If you’re a regular camper, why not try something different for your 2022 staycation? Here are a couple of tips from The Family Tent Shop team.

Seal spotting in Norfolk

Norfolk is known for its beautiful coastline and seaside towns, but did you know it’s also home to harbour and grey seals? The seals have their pups between June and August, so if you’re visiting in the summer you’ll have the opportunity to spot them! The main spot is at Blakeney Point Nature Reserve, where viewing areas are roped off and you can view without getting too close and disturbing their habitat.

Family camping in Norfolk has long been popular and there are some fantastic campsites. For seal spotting, Galley Hill Farm Campsite is in a great location and has fantastic family-friendly facilities including electric hook up and bike hire.

Wineries in southern England

Wineries might have you thinking of the South of France, but there are some great options right here in England too! Tinwood Estate Vineyard is located in Chichester, a perfect day trip from nearby seaside locations such as Bognor Regis and West Wittering. You can wander around the beautiful vineyards and enjoy a glass of English sparkling wine in the sun at their modern tasting room, which has a beautiful outdoor terrace area.

Journey further afield to Scotland

If the drive to the destination is just as much a part of the adventure for you, heading up to the Scottish Highlands is an absolute must-do. For out of this world scenery, check out Camusdarach, located nearby to beaches and sand dunes for long walks. You can even try some sea kayaking along the Atlantic Coast. Scotland is also an area where wild camping is legal, providing you follow some guidelines and respect the natural environment. So if throwing a tent in the car or jumping in your camper van and seeing where the road takes you is your thing, Scotland is an ideal destination for your next adventure.
